Welcome to Chula Vista AYSO Region 290

AYSO Region 290 Code of Conduct

Youth soccer is more than just a game—it is a place where players build confidence, develop friendships, and create lifelong memories. In AYSO Region 290, we are proud to foster a positive, inclusive community for all participants.

As members of the AYSO family, we share a responsibility to ensure that every player, volunteer, and supporter feels safe, respected, and welcome—both on and off the field.

We believe soccer is for everyone. Regardless of race, background, religion, gender, identity, ability, or family situation, every individual deserves to feel a sense of belonging. Our differences make us stronger, both as teams and as a community.

AYSO Region 290 maintains a zero-tolerance policy for discrimination, harassment, abuse, or violence of any kind. Any words, actions, or behaviors that harm, exclude, or disrespect others are not acceptable—whether from players, coaches, parents, or spectators.

We encourage anyone who feels unsafe or witnesses inappropriate behavior to speak up. All concerns and reports will be taken seriously, handled with care, and addressed appropriately to help maintain a safe environment for all participants. Retaliation against anyone who raises a concern will not be tolerated.

We are all on the same team when it comes to protecting our players and preserving the spirit of the game. We ask everyone in our community to model good sportsmanship, kindness, and respect at all times.

Together, we can ensure that AYSO Region 290 is more than just a soccer program—it is a community where every child feels valued, supported, and included.

Thank you,
AYSO Region 290 Board

AYSO CODES OF CONDUCT

AYSO has always encouraged good sportsmanship in its programs. In fact, “Good Sportsmanship” is one of the Six Philosophies listed in the AYSO National Bylaws. AYSO strongly recommends that Regions promote good sportsmanship through dynamic programs.

Elements of these programs may vary from Region to Region, but all define the conduct of players, coaches, referees and even parents. They explain the fundamentals of good behavior - which is simply showing courtesy and respect for all involved in the game. If players, volunteers and parents understand what is expected of them when it comes to good sportsmanship, they will act accordingly. Good sportsmanship doesn’t just happen. It needs to be taught, encouraged and demonstrated.

AYSO COACH PLEDGE:
  • Enthusiastically support and practice the AYSO mission to “enrich children’s lives” by embracing AYSO’s Six Philosophies of:

Everyone Plays, Open Registration, Balanced Teams, Positive Coaching, Good Sportsmanship and Player Development.

  • Stay informed about sound principles of coaching, child development and creating a safe haven.
  • Respect the game and know the Laws.
  • Emphasize to players that they must abide by the Laws of the Game at all times.
  • Develop a true respect for all referee decisions.
  • Develop a team respect for opponents and each other.
  • Ensure a safe environment for players.
  • Never yell at or ridicule a player, referee or opponent.
  • Always set a good example.
  • Remember that soccer is a game and all games should be fun.
  • Let the players play without constant instructions or commentary from sidelines.
  • Role model good sporting behavior.
AYSO PLAYER PLEDGE:
  • Play for the sake of playing a game, not just to please a parent or coach.
  • Always give your best effort and work as hard for your teammates as you do for yourself.
  • Respect the game and each other. Treat all players as you would like to be treated and let an adult know if someone or something concerns you.
  • Be a team player.
  • Be a good sport and support good plays whether they are made by your team or your opponents.
  • Follow by the Laws of the Game.
  • Cooperate with and show respect for coaches, teammates, opponents and referees.
  • Never argue with referees or complain about referee calls or decisions.
  • Control your temper even when you feel you have been wronged.
  • Do not use offensive or abusive language or behavior.
  • Remember that the object of the game is to win, but the goal is to have fun and give your best effort.
AYSO REFEREE PLEDGE:
  • Always remember that the game is for the players. Player safety and fair play come first.
  • Study and learn the Laws of the Game and understand the importance of the “Spirit” of the Laws. Help fellow referees do  the same.
  • Encourage and enforce the AYSO Six Philosophies, especially “Everyone Plays,” “Positive Coaching,” and “Good Sportsmanship.”
  • Demonstrate respect for all participants; coaches, players and spectators.
  • Respect other referees’ decisions, and do not publicly criticize another official.
  • Wear the proper uniform and keep it in good condition.
  • Maintain good physical condition to keep up with the speed of play.
  • Stay calm when confronted with emotional reactions from players, coaches and parents.
  • Honor accepted game assignments. In an emergency, find a replacement.
  • Support good sportsmanship with a kind word to players, coaches and parents of both teams when deserved.
  • Always be fair and impartial, avoiding conflicts of interest. Decisions based on personal bias are dishonest and unacceptable.
AYSO PARENT PLEDGE:
  • Attend and participate in team parent meetings as requested.
  • Partner with volunteers to keep your child and all children safe.
  • Be on time or early when dropping off or picking up your child for training or a game.
  • Ensure your child is supported and encouraged by family or loved ones at games.
  • Encourage your child to have fun and keep sport in its proper perspective.
  • Define winning for your child as doing his/her very best and appreciate Development over Winning.
  • Endeavor to understand the Laws (rules) of soccer and support the efforts of referees.
  • Honor the game and show respect for all involved including coaches, players, opponents, spectators and referees.
  • Applaud and encourage players from both teams and do not yell out instructions as this causes confusion to the players and ultimately, hinders development.
  • Refrain from making negative comments about the game, coaches, referees or players, especially from the sidelines.
